Food Guidelines in a Nutshell
Do NOT used raised feeders (see my link
for bloat for international study) or add water.
AVOID
Unidentified ingredients (not poultry but
chicken, not fish but salmon, etc)
Wheat, Soy, Corn and Beet (low on the list
for Beet)
Avoid Citric Acid used as a preservative
No fat in the top 4 ingredients
No by-products
LOOK FOR
3 or 4 different sources of meat protein,
positions 1 and 2 occupied by a meat source*
Look for whole or meal products, in that
order
Look for supplements added AFTER processing
so amounts can be validated
*ALLERGIES?
Limit
to 1 or 2 uncommon meat sources and very limited list of ingredients. (i.e., Duck and Sweet Potato)
SNACKS
Do not compromise and give high-sugar snacks. Use same rules as above. Try and stay
in same family of foods where possible to provide balanced meals and treats
